It's the first of the month! Or, more like the 4th...In this week's blog I will talk about the reason why I don't have any updates on my map. Yay, procrastination!...As well as my plans for the future.
Hi everyone! Welcome back to another installment of my Blogville (Official title? Might as well be). Over the past week I have been hard at work trying to figure out my plans for the future. On top of that, I had to situate a bunch of bills, student loans, and other stuff I need to pay for (Being an adult is great!). That Bone Thugs and Harmony song comes to mind. But seriously, it's February, and GDC is around the corner. For all intents and purposes, I'm psyched. I get to go to a conference that I have been dreaming about since I was a wee tyke. But, it's also sort of bitter. This trip to California is essentially my last hoorah...or at least it could be.This past week I have been talking and making arrangements with my folks back home. Some of you may know this, but I plan on moving back to Jersey at the end of March. I do plan on going to GDC with a positive attitude, but I have to be real about it. There is a very good chance I won't find a job. And if I do end up meeting the right person, it may not be a guarantee that I get a job or an "in". I'll really have to see, and it depends on how I go about the trip.
I spoke with my tutor from back home this week. He was always there for me since I was young, and he is still right there helping me out. Anyway, he gave me some nice advice on what mindset I should go into the conference with. For those of you reading who plan on trying to go to conferences or just trying to network in general, listen (or read intently). If you are trying to make contacts and network, keep in mind that is what you want to do. A lot of people, when they meet someone from their dream industry, they mostly want to probe for a job. People say they want to network, but really they just want to find a job. There is a good chance that the person that you talk to at a conference will not be in a position to help you. However, they could know someone who knows someone. That's how it works. Say you get to know this person, and you help them out, they won't forget it. They'll definitely forget you if you come off like you want a job. The best advice is to just make friends and hope for the best. The talk went on for a lot longer than that, but that is essentially the gist. Just try to make yourself a part of that community. That's what I plan to do.
Assuming I go back home (which will probably happen), I'll still continue to look for jobs in the game industry...at least for a little while. If it doesn't work out, I may have to look at other fields of work. I was thinking if this didn't work out, I was thinking of law enforcement. Weird, huh? Anyway, we'll see. I will keep you all updated.
In other news, regarding the map, I did actually get a formal asset list, but it turns out that I need to either find free stuff, or make it myself...I'm more than likely going to get cracking and find free stuff. That's all that's left. Unfortunately for me, my artist friend is busy trying to get his portfolio in line. It's ok, I'll be able to get it done. Now if only XCOM 2 didn't come out this weekend...and if UDK can cooperate with me and let me set up my textures. Took me like an hour and a half to figure it out. I got it for next time! Alright, brief stream of conscious is over. I promise I'll have stuff next week. Till next time, friends!
